Star Wars. All the Star Wars. That’s what I want for Christmas — and chances are the geek in your life does, too. Christmas Day is a busy one for movie theaters, and seeing “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will be on a lot of holiday to-do lists. If it’s on yours, a copy of Star Wars: Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel would be a great gift idea.
Catalyst isn’t a novelization of the film: It’s a companion story about the chain of events that led to the creation of the Death Star. That’s a story any Star Wars fan is going to want to read anyway, movie or not. Going to see “Rogue One” is just going to make it all the more entertaining. The novel was written by James Luceno, the author of several of my favorite Star Wars books, including Darth Plagueis and Tarkin. The odds are pretty good that your own Star Wars reader will know and like Luceno, too.
Now, if you really want to be at the top of your Star Wars geek’s “Nice” list, you could also pick up a copy of the official “Rogue One” novelization. It feature expanded information and extra scenes you won’t see in the movie, and it was written by Alexander Freed, a veteran Star Wars writer. Freed’s novel Star Wars: Battlefront: Twilight Company is — believe it or not — one of my favorite works of military science-fiction, Star Wars or otherwise. This guy really knows what he’s doing, and there’s no reason why a “Rogue One” fan won’t enjoy this one, even if she or he sees the movie a dozen times.
